The Maritime Tactical Operations Course is a hands-on introduction to maritime vessels and the tactics employed to secure or regain control of a high interest vessel. The emphasis of this course is tactical solutions that can be used in both a maritime environment and land based tactical operations. The topics discussed in this course will highlight all functions in tactical operations.


Students are shown proper room entry and clearing techniques that will improve officer safety. Students will also learn techniques to approach a vessel and several ways to gain access to a vessel whether it is at port or underway. A major emphasis will be placed on team movements and conquering and taking advantages of tactical angles. All tactics are taught from the ground level so prior tactical experience or education is not necessary however it is recommended. This will be presented in a classroom setting and on board the vessel.


Classroom lectures will discuss breaching considerations with maritime vessels, breaching equipment currently employed by tactical teams and the effects they have on these vessels. Students will become familiar with commercial vessels that utilize oceans, Great Lakes and rivers. They will also learn the dangers associated with these vessels and the documentation that helps identify the dangers and those who are supposed to be on board.


The training will conclude with multiple scenarios that range from active shooter to terrorist incidents. The scenarios bring realism to the training and allows for the students to employ all of the tactics learned throughout the training.


The course requirements will be the responsibility of the host agency, and will include:


  • Sufficient area to perform the practical exercises
  • Access to Maritime Vessel
  • Classroom with power point projector and speaker system
  • Adequate seating for the size of class enrolled
  • Restroom facilities

Students should bring all issued tactical equipment to include:


  • Helmet
  • Tactical vest
  • Tactical response uniform
  • Boots, gloves
  • Primary and secondary weapon systems
